Severe Hip Pain Can Be Caused
By A Variety Of Conditions…

› [Severe Hip Pain]

It is important to know that severe hip pain comes with a wide variety of conditions that range from the simple to serious...!

If you experience hip pain that is not an emergency, but is ongoing and not improving for a period of more than two weeks, it is best to get it checked out by a professional ...

 Sciatica...

One common cause of severe hip pain is sciatica…

Sciatica will cause severe hip pain running from your hip, down the back of your leg, the back of your calf and into your foot. Have a look at this diagram...

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body...

Pain from sciatica will be due to an underlying condition:

  • Herniated or slipped disc - with full or partial spillage of the nucleus pulposis (the soft watery bit in the middle of the cartilagenous disc material that resides between the bony vertabrae)...
  • Degenerative Disc Disease - vertebral bones and discs are weakening and pathology is developing as they collapse onto one another ...
  • Spinal Stenosis – narrowing of the canal through which a nerve trunk emerges from the cord...
  • Spondylolysthesis – this is bone (not disc) slippage; often times found in women post pregnancy...
  • Anatomic Anomaly - The nerve runs through the Piriformis muscle in your buttocks in a way that leaves the nerve more exposed posteriorly, making chances of sciatica greater from an organic perspective; its predispositioned in people who have this anomaly...

In each of these cases, diagnostics and imaging are going to be necessary to determine the root cause in these cases of severe hip pain. Temporary back pain relief may invovle rest, ice, compression with tape and ergonomically correct seating and laying down positions...

BUT, medical or chiropractic intervention will eventually be required as you dont want to hit and miss in this case; leaving these conditions can eventually cause permanent nerve or tissue damage...

  • And in rare instances, make you a candidate for...

Cauda Equina Syndrome:

One Emergency Situation
You Should Know About…

The Cauda Equina is a portion of the spinal cord that goes into separate threads and was named for the tail of a horse...

Cauda Equina syndrome occurs rarely, but you should know about it if you are having severe hip pain that accompanies any of these listed medical conditions…

Please call an emergency number for an ambulance immediately :

  • You loose control of your bladder or your bowels…
  • Have sudden sexual dysfunction…
  • If you have numbness or tingling in the saddle region…
  • If there is numbness and tingling down your legs into your toes that comes on suddenly…

This can be due to your Cauda Equina (a bunch of nerves that fan outward from your spine) being compressed by your sacrum (the triangular bone at the bottom of the spine). If this gets compressed to the point of the above listed symptoms, this is nerve damage that can lead to paralysis…

It has even been noted to lead to death in races of people with flat shaped sacral bones such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean people. So, if you are a member of one of these races please know that this is something to really pay attention to…!

Arthritis Can Cause
Severe Hip Pain…

There is a wide variety of arthritic conditions to consider, but here, I am going to talk about only two, as they are the most commonly occuring ones...

Osteoarthritis...

Severe hip pain could occur in this instance because your cartilage and synovial lining has been worn away due to...

  • Overuse...
  • Recurring injury...
  • Injury that has not been resolved...
  • Bone spurs (osteophytes) and calcified tendons are usually the culprits…

Severe hip pain from osteoarthritis is found in people who have played sport for a living and also in people who have physically demanding jobs.  Severe hip pain  develops when components in and around the joint are literally being worn away (such as when bone rubs against bone because there is no more cartilage left, and because of this, develops bone spurs...

Although osteoarthritis is usually not going to be fatal (unless an infection develops in the area and is left untreated) it is still important to get a correct diagnosis...

This is because there are stages where measures can be taken that will get you out of hip joint pain and active again and then there is a point where nothing can be done because the damage has progressed too profoundly...

You will either need to live with severe hip pain or have surgery...

With hip surgery, even then, there are no guarentees that the pain will be resolved...

So if you play sport, do a physical job or are just a person with an active lifestyle, preventative care such as chiropractic and diet can do wonders to keep you from coming up with joint damage...

Rheumatoid Arthritis...

In Rheumatoid Arthritis, the auto-immune system is mistakenly attacking the synovial lining and synovial fluid within the joint.

Severe hip pain presenting as a Rheumatoid condition is an auto-immune disease that causes the body to mistakenly attack its own synovial linings...

There are a number of drugs and various treatments such a...

  • NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)...
  • DMARDS -disease modifying anti-rheummatic drugs...

Pain relief for this condition is very individual.  DMARDS that are used to control pain and inflammation need to be in combinations that fit your body chemistry and compatible with the stage the disease has progressed to…

It is a very tailored prescription that takes quite a good deal of testing and skill on the part of your physician to deliver the result, but lives are being improved a great deal from these treatments...

Please see a Rheumatologist for this type of treatment…

  • If you cannot get to a specialist or cannot afford one,  there are many and varying opinions and discussions currently being had about the use of therapeutic grade Turmeric...

Turmeric root is for purchase on Amazon and you can  grow it yourself if you can produce a warm climate via natural sun or green house…

Its in the ginger family and is finicky; growing conditions are an extremely delicate matter...

And throwing a hand full of powdered Turmeric into your curry is not going to give you the desired affect as the heat from cooking will denature the Curcumin; which is the active ingredient...

Or, there are supplements in a wide range of prices. If you are going to use turmeric in supplement for, check for bio-availability....

It is fat soluble so needs to be taken with milk if you can tolerate dairy, or a bit of Pine Nut Oil or High Quality Organic Olive Oil…

Some people are having alot of success  with it while for others, it does not do a thing. I suspect again this will have to do with the progression and the type of arthritis associated with your condition, your unique metabolism, and possibly your blood type...

  • If you are susceptible to infection and cannot get antibiotics, you may consider Stabilized Allicin…

This is the compound in garlic that kills bacteria. Most products never make it past your stomach. Stabilized Allicin from Allicin International is patented and guaranteed to get to the rest of your body….

I have used it myself and can personally endorse this products safety and effectiveness as long as you take it as recommended…

  • If you take any kind of antibiotic, natural or otherwise, please also use a safe and stable pro-biotic such as opti-bac to re-fluorinate your intestinal tract...

Natural Pain
Relief...

Over the counter as well as prescribed pain relief medications are fast acting and potent, but what happens if you need to take them to manage your pain over a period of years, or for the rest of your life...?

You may wish to do some research and look into some natural pain relief remedies that will not have the toxic effects on your internal organs that most pain medications do after a lengthy period of time...

I have provided some basic information regarding supplementation that provides natural pain relief to help get you started - just click on the link below...

Natural Pain Relief

Ankylosing Spondylitis...

Ankylosing Spondylitis is a progressive disease that eventually leads to joint fusion. Chiropractic using Thompson Technique is particularly good at keeping the joints moving.

This is a disease process noticed mainly in the male population; with females presenting with it rarely…

Usually the onset is between the ages of 18 and 21 years of age. It often presents as soreness in the hips - progressing eventually to severe hip pain. A hallmark of this disease is that it will be aggrevated by rest...

There will be severe hip pain and other joint pain due to the joints stiffening and 'locking up'. HLA-B27 is thought to be the gene responsible for the expression of this particular disease…

If you have Ankylosing Spondylitis, the more you can get yourself to move, the more the pain will lessen, you will find yourself getting worse with rest. This is because the disease itself is one of inflammation that eventually fuses bones of the joints together through a degenerative process...

The key is low impact exercise such as swimming or a progressive yoga work out everyday despite the fact that you will be feeling tired…

A good diet that is in line with your blood type will also benefit you as this will keep more oxygen in your body. The more oxygen you have in your tissues, the more flexible your muscular system will stay despite the body's attempt at inflammation…

A blood type diet can also help with keeping inflammation down through the elimination of some foods and the addition and focus on others with added supplementation…

Allopathic medicine has a whole host of drugs to treat Ankylosing Spondylitis and ease pain. You will need to work closely with your phycisian to see which ones work best with your body chemistry and lifestyle...

Eating Right For Your Type can reduce the need for the inflammatory response to kick on in the body.

Some Of These Conditions
Can Benefit From
Chiropractic Treatment…

Among the severe hip pain conditions that can benefit from chiropractic are:

  • Partial Disc Herniation (disc bulge)...
  • Sciatica...
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis - A professor of mine at school had Ankylosing Spondylitis and swore by Thompson Chiropractic Technique to keep him mobile ...
  • Subluxation in and around the hip area…
  • Some cases of osteoarthritis...

I recommend finding chiropractors that use x-ray diagnostics in their practice if you suspect that you have any of these presenting conditions…

This is because when we are talking about the area of the hip joint pain , diagnostics become complicated and you will want your chiropractor to be able to check for tumors, infections and everything else that could be present…

Please do not, in these instances, accept blind adjustments; this could hurt more than it will help…

Chiropractic Techniques I recommend:

  • Activator Methods Protocol
  • Thompson Technique
  • S.O.T. (Sacral Occipital Technique)
  • A.R.T. (Active Release Technique)

To my mind (and there are those who would beg to differ) these techniques are the safest and most pain free if your joints are still in a condition where they will benefit from chiropractic adjusting…

A Few Things To
Keep In Mind...

Keeping a journal of your progress is both useful for yourself and as a legal document; name names with times and dates...

In Summary...

  • I recommend that you get imaging done so that you do not add to your suffering by throwing money away or incurring more damage; there are multiple arguments going regarding whether people with rheumatoid should have chiropractic adjusting for example...
  • No matter which type of treatment you elect to have, you need to be thoroughly checked out to receive correct treatment so that you can go forward with certainty …
  • Since these types of diagnoses can be complicated at times, I recommend keeping a pain journal in the event you need to see more than one doctor…
  • This will come in handy if you suspect mis-diagnosis or mis- treatment…
  • Hang in there; it may take a couple of tries to get it right, but be persistent, because through persistence, you will get there in the end…!
