Hip Pain Relief And
The Use Of Ice, Compression,
And Chiropractic...

› [Hip Pain Relief]
No heat for 72 hours...!

In seeking hip pain relief, heat is often the first modality of relief people turn to but...

  • Pain killers, heat cream, the hot water bottle or microwave a heat pack are not a good idea...

They will feel nice, temporarily, but additional swelling in the tissue can occur as a result if these are used too soon after the onset of soreness or injury, limiting  your range of motion and adding to the pain after the therapeutic effects have worn off; and this will ultimately delay your recovery…

Hip Pain Relief

And Inflammation...

By comparing a healthy joint with a damaged one, you can get a visual impression of what is causing you pain, and how important it is to take care of your hip joint...

Inflammation is traditionally described in these five signs…

  • Rubor-Redness...
  • Calor-Heat...
  • Tumor-Swelling...
  • Dolor-Pain...
  • Functio – Laesa- Loss of function...

and is actually important in recovery from hip pain

It is the sign of swelling (tumor) from excess fluid gathering in the joint that we want to limit in achieving a speedier recovery from hip joint pain...

In taking measures to provide ourselves with hip pain relief, we also need to determine what it is we are actually dealing with...

Please refer to the link above in order to rule out infection, fracture, or auto-immune disease such as rheumatoid before proceeding to use ice and compression...

  • If you are also runnning a fever please seek medical attention...!

Ice Can Be Used
Immediately Unless…

When Ice therapy is NOT to be used:

  • You have an open wound…
  • A heart condition..
  • A prosthetic…
  • If you are at an age (babies or elderly) that the ice would be more of an irritant than an analgesic…
  • If you have a critical illness that makes you more susceptible to cold…

Also, if you have been diagnosed with a Rheumatoid condition, this is a disease of the auto-immune system that affects your joints...

Hip pain relief will involve being treated with drug therapy in order to stop the destruction of your joint. Ice may help, but is not the answer in terms of this condition...

So please rule out this scenario before spending large amounts of time treating your hip pain with ice treatment…

If Ice Is
Indicated…

A bag of crushed ice holds a constant temperature for a 10-15 minute treatment and is comfortable in that it bends ands shapes itself to you...!

If you have determined that ice treatment is an appropriate course of treatment for hip pain relief for you...

You can use:

  • A bag of crushed ice applied against a wet flannel onto the skin…
  • Leave for ten minutes only, then remove it…
  • Apply again within a half an hour – some people will be able to tolerate more and some less…
  • Unless you are an athlete, apply ice no more than three times in a day…

There are some people who need ice, but will express anything from displeasure to going into shock if ice is applied to their skin

In this case, there are a lot of ice gel bags, and instant ice packs on the market, and you can use them in the case of extreme sensitivity to ice as they do not keep the cold nearly as well and you can also put them on top of clothing to lower temperature gradually...

But if you can deal with the cold, everything I have read and tried in the past twenty years points to the best result coming from a bag of crushed ice onto a wet flannel…

This is because it has been observed that crushed ice will hold the cold from beginning to end in the course of ten minutes, thereby giving maximum treatment over the time period of the application…

In using a bag of crushed ice held against a wet cloth against your skin, you are also protected from ice burn while receiving the maximum cold for your treatment...

Other inflammatory factors can still be present, and they are actually necessary for healing, but controlling the swelling (fluid influx) into the joint is what we want to focus on…

Getting that part of the inflammation process reduced will allow for a greater range of motion in the joint resulting in moving you closer to achieving hip pain relief …

And that leads us to my next point…

After Twenty-Four Hours
The Joint Can Be Moved…

Depending on the scope of your injury, it can be best to have a professional such as a chiro or physio take you through the ranges of motion initially...

As long as breakage, infection and rheumatoid are ruled out…

Even the smallest amount of movement can be beneficial and aid in moving you toward hip pain relief after twenty-four hours has passed…

Ice treatment with some load bearing to the joint is beneficial…

Since ice treatment acts as an analgesic, it is the opportune time to re-introduce light non- weight bearing movement into the joint, that will progress into standing, and then to walking…

Soreness while introducing movement back into of a joint is acceptable, but you should not be trying to push through the pain...

By the time you push through the pain you will be re-injuring the joint…

Which is why…

Ice And Compression Is
Best For Rehabilitation…

Because one of the main causes of hip pain is the actual swelling, you can benefit by using the crushed ice on a wet flannel and wrapping cloth around the bag with sports tape or an ace bandage…

This will not only give additional support to the hip joint and hold the ice (which serves as a painkiller) as you re-introduce movement, it will also keep fluid in the joint to a minimum…

But will still allow for the benefits of the inflammatory process produced by the body to take place, and will allow for the acknowledgement of pain enough to know where your limits with movement are for the time being…

If you stay disciplined in using:

  • Ice application...
  • Compression...
  • Movement for rehabilitation of the hip joint area…

You should see slow and steady progress over time…

If you are not seeing any improvement over the course of three days, it would be a good idea to consult a phycisian and get checked out...

How Chiropractic
Care Can Help…

This is a patient getting treated with Activator Methods Chiropractic. Notice there is no uncomfortable positioning that can overstretch already challenged muscles and add to pain.

Chiropractic care is usually very effective for hip pain relief…

The Chiropractor will be able to increase the range of motion in your hip through the use of their type of adjusting technique/s and adjunct therapies…

Chiropractic also will benefit you in that you will have your whole spine adjusted, and with some techniques such as Activator Methods, you will receive a whole body check…

Some chiropractic offices are open plan. There is no disrobing and people are adjusted next to one another.

Even if the pain is only in the hip it is best that the rest of the spine and all joints are checked for misalignment...

If you are given a full body  adjustment, this will correct your balance, stability and proprioception (where your brain percieves your body is in space) thereby promoting healing and bringing about hip pain relief more efficiently...

You may show up initially requiring hip pain relief, back pain relief, knee pain relief or relief from joint pain in general...

A chiropractor's target is to get you well, or as close to wellness as they are able, and keep you in a place of wellness for life…

In Summary…

  • Ice...
  • Compression...
  • Chiropractic...

These three will do wonders to provide you with hip pain relief and joint preservation for now and for life...
