Foot Disease Takes A
Multiplicity Of Forms...

› [Foot Disease]
Osteoarthritic conditions of the foot are the most common with rheumatoid conditions such as this one following as a close second...

Foot disease covers multiple topics; a few for our consideration here are...

  • Arthritis in the foot

  • Bunions

  • Gout

  • Flat Feet

In addition, at the bottom of this page is a section about homecare if you have anyone of these four conditions of the foot...

Osteoarthritis Is The
Most Common...

Osteoarthritis is the most common arthritis to occur in the body...

Foot pain can develop due to wear and tear that comes with age, a sports injury that did not heal properly, or in the case of the feet, imbalance in weight bearing that has gone uncorrected...

All of these can cause swelling, pain, inflammation and changes in the shape of the feet...

One more to add to this list is shoes that do not fit correctly or put major stress on the feet such as high heels... Metatarsalgia -pain at the head of the tarsal bones...

The big toe (halicis longus) in particular is affected by osteoarthritis as is the  Achilles Tendon and surrounding tissues...

With both of these structures there can be swelling, redness and pain that can become debilitating...

Bunions Are A Painful
Form Of Foot Disease...

Minor bunion...
Major bunions..

Bunions form on the side on top of the big toe, and also can form on the side and top of the small toe...

Bunion formation is a foot disease that may have origins in osteo or rheumatoid arthritis, or, they can form as a result of untreated or recurring injury. The bottom of the joint of the big toe will have been moved out of place. Years of abnormal gate will cause the toe to move inwards toward the others...

Either way, bunions are not always, but can become excruciatingly painful; especially when subject to shoes that do not accomodate the additional size they add to the foot...

It is in your best interest to get into a routine of ice, turmeric, and taping or using a specified bunion strap over the toes, and comfy shoes to keep your foot as comfy as possible. Sometimes, if the bunions have not progressed too far, if you take measures to correct your joint, they can be reduced...

The aim is to preserve the shape of your foot to avoid chronic joint pain...

Remember, the shape of your foot determines your gate and posture - how you walk determines whether or not your ankles, knees, hips and spine will stay in good shape, or if you might be a candidate for degenerative joint disease...

Gout, Your Big Toe And
Sometimes Fingers...

Gout usually occurs as a foot disease that is isolated to the area of the big toe; but also shows up in the fingers...

It is formed by uric acid that has formed crystals. The crystals morph into a spike covered shape. These sharp edged crystals form lumps, under the skin around the toe called tophi...

This condition is extremely painful...

High levels of uric acid can be brought about by losing weight too quickly, excess usage of alcohol, and rich food, but sometimes, gout appears spontaneously after surgery or an illness...

Curcumin – the active ingredient in Turmeric, is thought to have a positive effect on gout...

Curcumin inhibits chronic inflammation and is thought to remedy gout directly in that it reduces the activity of xanthine oxidase – this enzyme is involved in the production of uric acid...

Flat Feet Leave
Flat Prints ...

Flat feet can cause difficulty in the ankles, knees and hips - chiropractic is great for this condition...

A foot disease known as Flat Feet, a.k.a fallen arches, is usually visible to the eye in that the whole of the sole of the foot is on or very near the ground...

In pronounced flat footedness you can see this in the foot print; if you put your feet in water then step out applying normal pressure then look at the print, you will see the whole bottom of the foot...

There will be an absence of curvature and thinning between the ball  and the heel...

Flat feet may not produce any symptoms for some, but in others they can be at the root of back pain, hip pain, knees and ankles...

If you have flat feet, whether you are having symptoms right now or not, it is the best idea to see a chiropractor that prescribes orthotics...

Adjusting is a good idea as well since flat feet can put additional stress on all of your weight bearing joints; so taking care of your joints early in life will benefit you...

In later years, the chronic compensation in the ankles, knees and hips will hasten degenerative disease, which will cause a great deal of pain, and will also pre-disposition you for other conditions such as herniated disc...

Home Care And Natural
Pain Relief...

Other than regular chiropractic adjustments for your feet as well as the rest of your body, you can also:

Put yourself on a regime of ice – 10 minutes every 2 hours if you are experiencing an acute phase...

People tend to want to use heat only on these conditions because it is more pleasant, but I would encourage the use of ice during an acute phase and a combination of ice and heat during a chronic ongoing phase...

You can use ice bags or a bag of crushed ice - what ever form of ice you choose, please make sure there is a layer of wet cloth between you and the ice to avoid an ice pack burn...

 Supplementation such as :

  • Devils Claw

  • Turmeric

  • CoQ10

  • UC-II

All of these have been noted in the literature to be effective with regard to chronic pain and inflammation oriented disease processes...

You can also refer to the pain relief page for more information on which and how to choose your supplements...

Taping for osteoarthritic conditions can be helpful...

Most companies that sell sports tape such as Strength Tape have published video content onto you tube that demonstrate how to tape your joints...

These are usually used by athletes learning how to care for their own joints, but if you have degenerative disease in a joint this can be helpful to you too...!

Watch the video first and have a second pair of hand to help you , then apply your tape...

There is a learning curve involved so dont get down on yourself if you dont do it right the first time; you will get there...!

Osteoarthritis in the tarsal joint of the big toe can result in bunions...

Summarizing...

In summary, it is important to note that foot disease that is not taken care of properly can have a devastating affect on your quality of life...

It can impede your mobility and in the most extreme cases, such as diabetic retinopathy, can cost you a limb that cannot be retirieved except through the use of prosthetics...

Your feet pound the pavement, they walk, they run; your feet are a source of movement and provide us our mobility - without them, we have far fewer choices in life if you think about it ...

Take care of yourself, your whole body, because your state of health will directly or indirectly affect the state of health in the complex area of your feet...
