Chronic Neck And Shoulder Pain Needs Professional Attention…

Trigger points in the muscles can be the cause of chronic pain...

Chronic neck and shoulder pain can have multiple causes such as…

  • Cervical Spondylosis – spinal arthritis
  • Spinal Stenosis – narrowing of the space the nerves pass through from increased bone mass in the vertebrae…
  • Disc Prolapse – If the disc tissue has been pushed into a position to impinge on nerves of the brachial plexus, this will be excruciating, hot, constant pain…
  • Ligament or muscle injury – This type of tissue damage is common after a fall, a car accident, or a sporting mishaps…

Due to the wide range of motion in the shoulder, it will always be vulnerable during accidents, sporting endeavors etc.…

The greater the range of motion in a joint, the less stability there is, and therefore a greater likelihood of injury…

Chronic neck and shoulder pain has a large diagnostic range - the possiblities are numerous...

For example:

Chronic neck pain can weaken the muscles of your shoulder, leading to sub- acromial impingement and scapula problems.  Acromioclavicular joint pain can also radiate into the neck...

Heart disease can refer to the left shoulder, while gallbladder blockage due to stones will refer to the right shoulder…

Is your pain originating in your neck or shoulder, or maybe one of your internal organs…?

Considering the wide variety of possibility, and the vulnerability the shoulder has regarding permanent damage, its best to get checked out by a professional.

To get an accurate answer regarding chronic neck and shoulder pain, the symptoms need to be sorted through with diagnostic reasoning, and proper testing…

When Cryotherapy and Chiropractic
Will Benefit You…

The Activator Gun adjusts without damaging surrounding tissues, or causing you pain...

When you have determined that the pain is coming from the neck or the shoulder joint and the discs of the cervical spine have been thoroughly examined to rule out nerve impingement, the following can help you…

ICE packs on a wet cloth for 10 minutes every 2 hours…

Getting an appointment with a chiropractor…

The chiropractic methods I endorse and have used are:

  • Activator
  • A.R.T.
  • Thompson

I recommend these particular techniques in cases of chronic neck and shoulder pain for reasons of safety, and because, in my experience, they have  caused a minimal amount of fear, anxiety and pain for my patients…

When To Seek
An MRI…

MRI is considered advanced diagnostic testing and does a great job of viewing soft tissues around the neck and shoulder...

If you have had constant shoulder pain for 1 month or more, it is time to seek help. You will need your doctor to determine the cause if it has not made itself obvious so that you can be treated properly.

An MRI is an appropriate and safe test for the neck and shoulder, as it allows the reader to examine the soft tissues and vessels that run through the shoulder. The test is expensive however, and oftentimes, people are denied this test if they are part of a socialized medical system…

This makes it imperative that you keep a joint pain journal. This will serve as a record of time and intensity of your pain which will be evidence (or not) that you are in need of an MRI. It can also serve as a legal document that will prove negligence if you do not get the treatment you require…

Shoulders receive a lesser blood supply; therefore, they need to be treated properly within the scope of a certain timeline so that permanent damage does not ensue…

Keep a pain journal…

It’s a good idea for you to view your progress so that you remain aware of whether you are making progress or not, and it will keep the doctors informed; its win win for everyone…

Pain Signals May Continue To Fire
After The Damage Is Healed…

The emotions of fear, anxiety, or depression over a perceived lack of healing can cause stress that makes pain gates easier to open; so, the amount of pain we experience is related to the memory of damage that is now absent…

There are many factors which can increase or decrease pain messages…

Receptor cells (touch, pressure, temperature) can assume an altered state after injury and start sending pain messages if stimulated with specific information related to, for example, the position of the body when it encountered the pain initially; as the brain became aware of it...

This is why we guard an injured joint, often not moving naturally, even after the damage has healed. Anxiety will be there until we re-train our movement and grow in confidence that the pain will not return with the full force of the injury we experienced…

Pain messages can be made ‘bigger’ as they travel through the nerve pathways to the brain.

The brain can develop ‘memory maps’ of pain which can be set off without further injury happening. The example is when a person becomes an amputee and reports pain in the missing limb; the brain remembers by virtue of these maps; the map says the limb is there, whether it is or not (in the physical universe…)

How Chiropractic Can Be Helpful
For Chronic Neck And Shoulder Pain:

Chiropractic has, in many cases, broken pain cycles in chronic neck and shoulder pain, along with a whole host of other disease processes such as fibromyalgia…

In terms of the brain’s memory maps for pain, it is theorized through observation that chiropractic helps build new memory maps that distract from the pain cycle and eventually break it, replacing it with a memory map of how to stay well…

I think that, aside from feeling better after a chiropractic adjustment, there is tremendous value received in getting increased control of how your brain maps signals and therefore can speed recovery time...!

A short time after graduating from school, I set up my first home office in Chicago…

A friend of my partners came to me asking for treatment after visiting over 20 doctors and taking, over the years, 50 different medications to resolve her fibromyalgia with no positive results…

She moved about as much as she could, but was in pain constantly…

This first patient, independent of my school clinic was a baptism in fire.  My first words to her in response were ‘ok, let’s see what we can do to help you manage your pain – I am not sure I can do any more than that, but if you like, I can do a non-invasive technique that won’t cause you more pain and we can see how you go in three adjustments…’

In three adjustments, she was sleeping through the night for the first time in years…

I had to wonder if she had been mis-diagnosed with Fibromayalgia and the medications had done this to her...

Three months later she came by my house one morning; wearing running gear. My jaw dropped as she told me she didn’t hurt anymore so she decided to take up running…

I didn’t have the language for it twenty years ago, but now, I feel confident in saying that adjusting the spine as well as other joints in the body can clear old pain signaling patterns and create new wellness patterns…

 So, if you are experiencing chronic neck and shoulder pain;

1) Get yourself diagnosed first…

2) Once you know that your pain is based in your neck or shoulder with referred pain, you can try some of the home treatment described above…

3) You may seek out chiropractic to break the pain signaling maps that will have been forming in your brain so that you can move on from your injury…

Take a positive note from your experience during this time – should you come up with more joint pain at another time in your life, you will know how to proceed to get yourself taken care of in the most efficient way…
