SI Joint Pain- Why
Posture Plays A Key Role...

› [SI Joint Pain]
The pelvis is a complicated conglomeration of bones, sinews and muscle that houses a complex nerve network...

SI joint pain can be one of the most aggravating and painful of back and 'hip' pains….

People have come to me for years complaining about that 'hitch that hurts when they walk'…

And if they could just get it to go ' pop', it would be ok...

More precisely, this condition arises from inflammation of soft tisues, degeneration or calcification of cartilage and ligament between the sacrum and Ilium bones. If you have a look at the pictures down the page you can better acquaint yourself with what is going on from an anatomical viewpoint…

The SI Joint itself is a bit of a dichotomy as it is thickly wrapped in ligamentous tissue for stability, but is also designed in way that integrates your pelvis with the movement of your torso and your legs; so its job is to stabilize the body without being rigid itself...

This conglomerate of bones also changes in shape and texture from the time you are born. When you are an infant, the surfaces are smooth, but as we age, ridges and dimples develop across the surface of the bone and it changes shape…

And yes this does have to do with why you may be experiencing SI joint pain...

And even more so if you are a female – there are six different shapes to a woman's pelvis to one basic shape for a male...

And herein lies the potential for uniqueness in each of us. The onset of any type of  hip joint pain will depend on several factors...

The shape bone texture of your sacrum and ilium will influence how stable, strong and moveable your pelvis is and remains throughout your lifetime...

And if SI joint pain is going to be a recurrent factor in your spinal health or not...

Also to be considered are the forces of change due to ageing; which is directly linked to walking erect as a bi-ped…

Overuse due to compression, shearing and torsion can lead to S.I. Pain...

Then add in all of the different kinds of movement you might engage in in the course of your life...

If you think about this broad range of factors, it is a big ask for the SI joint to stay properly aligned…

Just standing upright in a gravitational force field is challenging for our human spines and offers a large variety of possibility for joint pain throughout the body...

Lets have a look at what happens to this particular joint and why...

Why The SI Joint
Gets So Irritated…

S.I. joint pain is caused by a number of conditions and possible distortions in the pelvis.

SI joint pain can come about due to:

  • Over stretching of the ligaments that bind the bones over time…
  • Direct impact from participation in sport…
  • Unbalanced muscle tension causing spasms during torsion of the pelvis...
  • Childbirth…
  • Anterior or posterior malpositioning of the spine over a long period of time…
  • Poor nutrition and chronic dehydration also eventually weakens fibrous tissues such as ligaments and tendons...

The SI joint pain will remain present, even if intermittently, until:

  • The joint is re-aligned…
  • Given space and time to stabilize…
  • The body is properly re-balanced…
Adding numerous layers of muscle tissue, we can begin to see the complexity of forces that surround the S.I. joint; making balanced muscular tension of prime importance...

What Will Give You Relief
From S.I. Joint Pain…

  • Rest
  • Ice pack – 10 minutes every two hours…
  • Compression with sports tape or S.I.Belt…
  • Ergonomic correction…

That is my own take on the RICE method for joint pain relief in this circumstance…

The E in RICE typically stands for Elevation, but when it comes to your hip area, elevation would not necessarily be appropriate…

So in this case the E is about ergonomics...

Ergonomics is about how you are positioning your body in space when you stand, sit, walk and sleep...

That is what is important in a case of  SI joint pain…

Simple Ergonomic Corrections:

Men:

  • Remove the wallet from your back pocket…
  • Remove Keys, mobile phones, wrenches, assorted tools from your back pockets…

Women:

  • You are great at multi-tasking but please take care with your posture : be aware that balancing babies on hips with a phone tucked under your neck in your twenties or thirties can mean alot of SI joint pain in your forties and fifties...
  • Taking care in your positioning in lifting and transfering weight with infants and children now, will save the wear and tear on your SI joint and pelvis in the years to come...

Table height is of great importance when taking care of your posture.

This positioning gives rise to maladaptive muscle strength and therefore you will eventually be subject to SI joint pain…

  • For woman who work, carrying large work bags on your shoulders will also play a part in setting you up for SI joint pain due to the developing a one sided imbalance in muscle strength…

(The use of a hands free mobile set is advised if you are a person who is always doing and phoning at that same time...)

As a woman you have less muscle mass on the top end of your body and your lower body will try to compensate for this in numerous ways that can lead to additional wear and tear on your SI joint…

Solutions:

  • Make sure weight is distributed on both sides of your body evenly as you move about….
  • Weight lifting...

Go to the gym and start lifting weights. So many women are resistant to this idea, but it will keep your joints stronger and weight bearing exercise prevents osteoporosis which is a big plus as you age…

And, there are many women in show business and other walks of life who have chosen to develop their physique and it is noticeable how gracefully they are ageing...

Natural Pain
Relief...

Over the counter as well as prescribed pain relief medications are fast acting and potent, but what happens if you need to take them to manage your pain over a period of years, or for the rest of your life...?

You may wish to do some research and look into some natural pain relief remedies that will not have the toxic effects on your internal organs that most pain medications do after a lengthy period of time...

I have provided some basic information regarding supplementation that provides natural pain relief to help get you started - just click on the link below...

SI Joint Pain And
Chiropractic Care…

SI joint pain, in many cases, is easily resolved with chiropractic care…

The techniques I recommend are:

  • Activator Methods Protocol…
  • Thompson Technique…
  • Sacral Occipital Technique…
  • Active Release Technique…

The reason I recommend these techniques in chiropractic for SI joint pain over others is that they are full body techniques that do not leave other parts of the body unbalanced…

And, they are also less likely to do additional damage to your joint…

In more traditional techniques in chiropractic you may encounter the delivery of too much force for your size, age or strength…

So if you are reading this and you are NOT a well muscled fit male, below the age of forty five, I would consider the techniques I have listed…

Too much force applied to the body during an adjustment can de-stabilize a pelvis and make your SI joint pain worse just minutes off of the adjusting table...

As a chiropractor I have treated people with these techniques and have also received these treatments myself…

Bad posture will make you a strong candidate for joint pain...

Across the board they:

  • Work to relieve pain and promote healing…
  • Are not painful…
  • Are enjoyable in later sessions when you are accustomed to your chosen method of preventative care...

For now, please Google or call a chiropractor before making an appointment to find out how they work so you can know if their methods agree with you…

If you cannot speak to the doctor directly, ask for them to call you, or ask their receptionist what technique/s are used in the office; they should know...

There are over fifty different techniques practised by chiropractors today that I know about and probably many more......

As chiropractors, we all have different philosophies when it comes to treatment, so it is important to find one that suits you…
